Invisible Man Essay: Tone and Language -- Invisible Man Essays
Tone and Language in Invisible Man à à à à à There are not many novels that can produce such a feeling of both sorrow and jubilation for a character as Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. There is such a wide range of emotions produced by the novel that it is impossible not to feel both ways. Invisible Man is a wonderfully well written novel about an African American living in pre civil rights America. The novel is an excellent example of a bildungsroman, a character finding himself as the story progresses. The narrator (invisible man) starts off a naive college student and ends with the young man realizing that his world has become that of "infinite possibilities." Ellison's writing techniques include that of visual imagery, irony, occasional satire, and infinite examples of symbolism. All of these writing techniques help to further the novel, and benefit the book as a whole. Two techniques that Ellison used better than any others, however, are tone and language. Although Ellison used these techniques well, there we re some harmful mistakes in his writing which damage the credibility of the story. à One of the most important aspects to any novel is its tone. Tone sets the pace of the novel and dictates what kind of emotional effect the anecdote will have on the reader. The tone of Invisible Man is, for the most part, a remarkable thing. Ellison's tone creates both a tragic and a comic response to the reader. Ellison's tone can be said to be "tragi-comic" (Bellow). This tone occurs "in the best pages of Invisible Man... in which an incestuous Negro farmer tells his tale" (Bellow) of seducing and impregnating his own daughter. Through tone Ellison reveals how his invisible man thought himself to be invisible, as he learns that... ...ropriate to a character who has been presentd mainly as a passive victim of experience" (Howe). à With the exception of a few faults, Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man is an excellent novel. Ellison makes good use of many literary techniques necessary for writing a good novel. These include satire, irony, symbol, imagery, and especially tone and language. The novel appeals to all races and ages of people because of the language used and of the heroic story of the young Negro trying to make it in a predominantly white American society. This novel is truly a classic and should become more and more so as people of all races look back on the symbolic struggle this young man had. à Works Cited Bellow, Saul. High Turnover Rate Essay
1. Key issue High labour turnover rate is prevalent in the insurance industry and especially in prudential. Thus, the firm may have to incur more costs and time to train new employees. http://business.asiaone.com/Business/My%2BMoney/Building%2BYour%2BNest%2BEgg/Insurance/Story/A1Story20090821-162517.html 2. Causes The main cause of the high turnover is the organisation culture. Observable Artifact Every Monday, all employees are required to wear white as a symbol of unity and recite the firmââ¬â¢s pledge, which is to place their familyââ¬â¢s interest before their own. While expecting the employee to perform his best, the firm should also provide adequate welfare for its employees. Otherwise, employees may feel discontented and choose to leave, thus, increasing the turnover rate. Espoused Values The firm espouses the value of family. Family in this case, refers to oneââ¬â¢s own family as well as the firm. Everyone has an obligation to work hard for their family. It is taboo for the employee to raise their point of view during meetings, as they have to respect the ââ¬Å"seniorsâ⬠in the ââ¬Å"familyâ⬠. Top performing employees are rewarded handsomely while underperforming employees are pressured to hit their quota or be forced to leave the firm. Based on the Blake-Mouton Managerial Grid, Prudential has an autocratic leadership, characterised by high concern for production and low concern for people. http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_73.htm http://www.kean.edu/~lelovitz/docs/EDD6005/humansideofenterprise.pdf Enacted Values The espoused values are not exhibited boldly. Some meetings are on the weekends, preventing employees from spending family time. This discrepancy can cause higher turnover rate. Basic Assumption The firm adopted the Taylorism theory, which attempted to increase productivity by motivating its employees through monetary incentives. Sales ranking charts are commonly seen in the office. Top employees are rewarded and highly regarded in the company, while the rest are neglected. By assuming that employees are only motivated by money, the employeesââ¬â¢ morale is ignored. Herzbergââ¬â¢s motivation-hygiene theory states that an employeeââ¬â¢s satisfaction is dependent on ââ¬Å"hygieneâ⬠issues and ââ¬Å"motivatorsâ⬠. In Prudential, the hygiene factors like work/life balance and good inter-personal relationship with the superiors are lacking. Thus, employees are more inclined to leave the firm, contributing to its high turnover rate. http://research-methodology.net/frederick-hertzbergs-two-factor-theory/ http://www.businessballs.com/herzberg.htm 3. Analysis of the theories 1. 2. 3. 3.1 Taylorismââ¬â¢s theory This theory assumes that each employee will maximise his productivity in order to earn the bonuses. When interviewed by Kurt Nelson in his study of pharmaceutical sales teams, all of them stated that the incentives for the top achievers were very motivational. This theory corresponds with a research done by Michele Marchetti in 1998, which indicates that commission encourage salespeople to perform. However, Kurt Nelsonââ¬â¢s study involved only four employees, of which all of them worked together as a team. The small number of the employees is insufficient in proving that monetary incentives can motivate them to perform. Furthermore, this study is based on a sales team, where the motivation to perform can be different from that of an individual salesperson. 3.2 HerzBergââ¬â¢s Motivation-Hygiene theory Herzbergââ¬â¢s theory can be used to detect issues that need to be mitigated. In a study conducted by Jones and Lloyd, employees who contribute ideas in a meeting usually exhibit the following motivations: a) A desire for recognition from a line manager b) The desire for recognition from colleagues For instance, the use of this theory can help Prudential in strengthening its family culture and allow the voices of the employees to be heard. However, there are also several limitations too. Herzbergââ¬â¢s theory is still a generalization which cannot be applied to all individuals. It is also based on interviews with accountants and engineers. An accountant may be motivated by increased pay while the Prudential employee may be more motivated by flexible work timings. Furthermore, giving an employee responsibility they are not ready for can be overwhelming and become a demotivator. 4. Authorââ¬â¢s perspectives To rectify this issue, the management at Prudential should adopt a healthy balance of the Taylorism theory and Herzbergââ¬â¢s theory. Providing incentives for the employees to perform in the Taylorismââ¬â¢s theory is merely a hygiene factor in Herzbergââ¬â¢s theory. The management need to incorporate other factors to encourage lower turnover. Studies have shown that to predict voluntary turnover, an increase in individual values enactment corresponds with a decrease in turnover. [citation] Another study which includes 2,622 employees from a hospital located in the US, found that the organizationââ¬â¢s incorporation of a values enactment measurement system into the formal performance evaluation process benefited the organization by retaining employees more likely to conform to the organizationââ¬â¢s espoused values. [citation] Hence, Prudential should first boldly exhibit its espoused values. Incentives should also include things like family trips. Performance measures should not only be linked to sales quota only, but the number of trainings conducted by the senior employees to the junior employees, the amount of time spent with their own family and more. While recruiting employees, Prudential need to conduct a thorough interview, to screen the employees with the same values as the firm, as they would be more likely to stay in the firm. While such recommendations can motivate employees, it is difficult to measure the amount of time one spends with his family as the data could be easily fabricated. The cost of recruiting new employees must be equivalent to the increase of sales made from this new strategy, for this change to be justifiable. Resistance to change will also be expected from the management as the previous system has been very successful in ensuring high profits for the firm, despite the high employee turnover rate. In a study conducted by Caliper Human Strategies Inc., a human resource consulting firm in Princeton, NJ, and Automotive News magazine, reveals that top salespeople in 3000 car dealerships have several personality traits (Sawyers, 1997). Some of the strong personality traits are: Ego drive( the need to motivate people), Ego strength (ability to handle rejections), Self structure( a strong ability to organise oneââ¬â¢s own work), Assertiveness(persuading others to adopt a different point of view). Prudential can use these traits listed in order to hire the right person for the job. Perhaps a job trial can be conducted for the candidate rather than the standard interview. 5. Conclusion 6. Appendix * A newcomer should not be employed with the same compensation system as the veteran. (us automobile ) * Changing the compensation system to a more comfortable and predictable system such as the salary based payment will greatly increase the retention rate of the salespeople. This has been proven in different dealerships throughout the country.Abetter alternative is to allow the salespeople to switch between the two compensation methods. During a lean period, the dealership would allow the salespeople to switch to salary based, and during the boom period to switch to risk based compensation method. * Foster a more-family like culture; http://www.businessballs.com/herzberg.htm http://www.managementstudyguide.com/herzbergs-theory-motivation.htm

Intelââ¬â¢s Capital Budgeting Decision in 2013 Essay
An arguable capital budgeting decision in Intelââ¬â¢s Financial Plan 2013 Thursday 17 January 2013, Thomson Reuters, the worldââ¬â¢s largest international multimedia news agency, has highlighted some concerns about Intelââ¬â¢s Financial Plan 2013. Noel Randewich, the reportââ¬â¢s writer, thought Intel Corporationââ¬â¢s current-quarter revenue forecast disappointed Wall Street analysts. The reason behind is Intel will spend more $2 billion of its increased spending on expanding researching facility. This action is a controversial one because it has feedbacks from different sides. Essentially, one major worry is probably that the predicted personal computer market size is going to be smaller in 2013 while Intel lays a bet on very huge investment. However, Chief Executive Paul Otellini said that modern long-term assets could help Intel maintain the lowest cost as possible. On the other hand, some other Wall street analysts advocate Intelââ¬â¢s decision due to fact that it would be a plus for company ââ¬Ës operating efficiency. Intel was founded in 1968 with a vision for semiconductor memory products. It is best known for producing the microprocessors found in many personal computers. The company also makes a range of other hardware including network cards, motherboards, and graphics chips. Yet Intel became reputed after Wintel alliance with Microsoft Corporation, which enabled Intel to possess 80% of personal computer chip market. Back to the new event in the 2013 first quarter, the $2 billion investment on long-term assets belongs to capital budgeting decision type. Undoubtedly, it is very important decision because Intel has to face a great number of effects. The first clear limitation could be that Intel would run the operation under its capacity due to unused space of new plant as well as to the reduced market size. At the same time, another stumbling block might be that its higher fixed cost than previous years unquestionably harms the companyââ¬â¢s bottom line. Intel estimated first-quarter revenue of $12.7 billion, plus or minus $500 million whereas analysts expected $12.91 billion for the current quarter. Wall Street analysts assumed that Intel has been making a risk bet for 2013 and Intel should not expand its business while the PC chip market is not growing much. It is very reasonable for those analysts to think like that because Intel now has a absolutely strong competition with other competitors for the new market segment of mobile phone chip making. It has recently entered this market territory in 2012 and its market share for smart phones is less than 1 percent, trailing Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics, ARM and others. Therefore the whole market size for Intel is not really large when compared to some previous years. However, Intelââ¬â¢s investment decision definitely holds positive aspects for the reason that the long-term implications of said decision is to keep the cost lowest on a per unit basis owing to the leading edge capacity. Besides this, a second plus point could be Intel has prepared a plan to raise the market share in the whole industry with a new facility of researching future manufacturing technology. It seems to be a sign of innovations, new products, new market share and of course higher returns in 2013. In conclusion, this Intelââ¬â¢s capital budgeting decision is surely a bet but times and the companyââ¬â¢s efforts itself will answer us how it can uphold the leading position in chip making industry in 2013 and following years. Works Cited Noel Randewich, Liana B. Baker. ââ¬Å"Intel CEO to retire as chipmaker struggles with mobile.â⬠Reuters.com, 19 Nov 2012. Web. 18 Jan 2013. Are there any different pros and cons for Intelââ¬â¢s capital budgeting decision apart from ones said in the analysis? 2. With this new investment, give the probability that Intel can raise its share more 1% in smart phones chip making market. 3. How can Intel stabilize the profit margin after a huge investment in 2013 first quarter?

buy custom Western Civilization essay The ancient Babylon civilization was a great step for mankind to come together in the fertile land of the gulf, traversing through the Valley of Euphrates River also covering the land of the present day Iraq and Iran. The fertile land and water inspired settlement for agriculture that supported other trade and commerce activities that led to the creation of ancient city of Babylon. The race of the Turanians are responsible for the development and progress that come to be known Babylon, while the Mediterranean regions that entails the Black sea and the Caspian seas served as cradle home land for the Semites and Aryans, further South existed the Hamite race civilization region of Egypt (Demirdjian 2). The valley of Euphrates provided an ideal environment for human civilization. The ancient people were farmers and kept cattle and therefore there was a need for plenty of grass and fertile land for agriculture besides a sustainable water supply point. The Euphrates Rivers source was located in the vast mountains of Armenia whose highest peak is Mount Ararat whereby the rivers tributaries arose and trickled down. During summer, the rover flooded down from the mountains with tones of fertile volcanic soil that was deposited in the Valley of Euphrates. People built ditches and canals that were used to irrigate the land such that food production was done all year round (Demirdjian 3). Personal, I would have built a series of dykes and dams that would hold back the flooding water for production of hydro power besides providing water for irrigation. The entire Gulf of Persia would have become an exporting zone for tropical fruits and food as well as other commercial crops. Since Babylon was a merchant centre, I would have increased the opulence of trade and commerce by leasing out land to captured tribes if the local Babylonians were satisfied with the production since there was enough fertile land that would have been used to colonize the hot Arabian land that was always in need of food and clean water. The ancient Babylon sprang from the Sumerian civilization that has existed for thousands of years. Wheat an other cereals were cultivated in ancient Sumerian kingdom before 4500 B.C. Agricultural selection of the best hybrids of grass like cereals enhanced the development of food security. Further, high production of cereals enhanced the development of Mesopotamia that became Babylon once it was consolidated by King Sargon the great (Demirdjian 3). The First known men who organized the kingdom into a viable government was Nimrod the Great who is famed for constructing the great tower of Babel and King Sargon who used his power to unite the Sumerian under the Akkaddian kingdom with one language. Language acted as a cementing factor that allowed the kingdom to concentrate in agricultural, commerce and trade ways of life and a few time battles to remain relevant in the old savage world. Equally, existence of city states across Mesopotamia enhanced the development of Babylon. Each of the city states was remained self-sufficient and sustained by its produce and military affairs. The river provided a good transportation option for farmers and city states. Roads and inlets were built by the city states to spur development and movement of tradable gods and produce. Therefore when King Sargon consolidated the Kingdom, he only created unified political criteria that allowed the former Mesopotamia Sumerians to identify themselves as one nation though the leadership of city states remained irrelevant after the unification. Radically, in order to construct a lasting kingdom or empire there is a need for democratic space while the government takes a keen eye in building a strong defense an offense force. Therefore, King Sargon would have retained the autonomy of city states within Mesopotamia but his rule to use one language was a commendable action that allowed the city state to integrate as one huge Babylon kingdom. Eventually, Sumeria was absorbed into Babylon i n 2340 B.C., the inclusion of the Sumerian mathematics, writing methods and record keeping options become a backbone for development whereby King Hammurabi used the writing technique to draft laws (Texas AM University 3-4). The drafter and written law that come to be known as the codee of Hammurabi is among the ancient coded laws that organized the society politically, socially, and economically accountable for all its deeds. In the code of Hammurabi, there are specific rules and regulations that have to be changed in order to make out democracy in Babylon. For instance false evidence bearing was a discouraged vice in the law. Therefore, a judge was also liable if a witness bore false evidence that resulted in conviction or death of another. However, the law stood as bureaucratic code of conduct that disallowed the judge from altering judgment after giving a verdict. Instead, the law should have allowed people to witness cases, and a jury be appointed to examine the evidence every time there was a need before a verdict was reached. Therefore, personal I would have allowed space for an appeal in which even the Judge could consider the case from all angles. Equally, the code remained oppressive to the ignorant who received goods and stolen produce without knowledge of the source of the goods; If a man has stolen goods from a temple, or house, he shall be put to death; and he that has received the stolen pro perty from him shall be put to death (Hammurabi 6). The code of Hammurabi remained gender sensitive to the extent that women were treated as less equals to men. For example, the law allowed the state to prosecute and drown an adulterous woman while nothing happened to the man responsible. The most predominant culture in the code of Hammurabi is the revenge whereby if a man hit another mans wife and as a consequence, the aggressor mans daughter was killed to avenge (Hammurabi 209-210). However, the code maintained a social outlook than todays laws by allowing a woman to receive enough portions for her up keeping after a divorce (Hammurabi 142). In conclusion, the kingdom of Babylon was organized politically through laws and guidelines that streamline family life, society, trade, and commerce such that expansion of trade and facilitating of democratic justice were the only lacking virtues of the ancient kingdom. The ABCs of Alphabet Games A Complete Guide
The ABCs of Alphabet Games A Complete Guide SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Itââ¬â¢s hard to imagine a time when you didnââ¬â¢t know the alphabet, so the idea of teaching the letters to someone else can be daunting. But for toddlers and preschoolers (and anyone else learning English), the letters of the alphabet are the building blocks of the English language. Learning and recognizing them is the first crucial step to developing strong literacy and language skills. Enter: alphabet games. Alphabet games make mastering letters fun- which is exactly what learning should be! So whether you have a little one just starting out on their literacy journey, or know someone learning English as a second language, weââ¬â¢ve broken down everything you need to know about alphabet games. In this article, weââ¬â¢ll explain what alphabet games are, the best ones to use, and the mistakes to avoid when using them to guarantee learning success. Feature image:Retrokatz/CC What Are Alphabet Games? Alphabet games are any activities designed to help children learn the 26 letters of the English alphabet. They may also be referred to as ââ¬Å"letter games,â⬠ââ¬Å"ABC learning games,â⬠or ââ¬Å"letter recognition games.â⬠They can be as simple as using alphabet magnets to show letters, or as advanced as alphabet puzzles, and everything in between. Edward Miller/CC Why Do We Use Alphabet Games? Being able to read, write and listen are core to understanding and communicating in English (and any language). As such, we want to do everything we can to encourage success. By making that first big step (learning the alphabet) fun and engaging, children are more likely to remember letters and their sounds. The more they remember their letters, the more theyââ¬â¢ll recognize them and identify them in and out of order. And the more prepared theyââ¬â¢ll be to learn to read and write. Josh Applegate/Unsplash Early Childhood Cognition From the moment theyââ¬â¢re born, children are like sponges absorbing everything in their world. They want to know how things work, why they work, and what things are. Learning the alphabet serves as a base for learning to read, communicate and understand the English language. Itââ¬â¢s the first step to providing children with the tools to not only learn, but to seek answers on their own. To add to their knowledge base of how and why things work and what they are. Beyond the alphabet, letter games help children improve and strengthen their memory and cognition- all vital skills for anyone to have.. When it comes to mastering the alphabet, the vital concept a child must conquer is the ability to recognize letters and recall them. The easier they can recognize and recall, the easier itââ¬â¢ll be for them to learn letter sounds, which is a must for learning to read. Being able to ââ¬Å"recognize and recallâ⬠letters means your learner can tell the difference between each of the 26 alphabet letters. They can also say the name of each letter. Identifying a letter by its name and sound (regardless of the order presented), requires memorization and practice. So, the more letter recognition games they play, the more fun theyââ¬â¢ll have, but also the more letter repetition theyââ¬â¢ll be exposed to and the more easily theyââ¬â¢ll be able to remember and recognize letters and sounds. The following is a chart featuring a few of the reading-related milestones to look out for depending on your learnerââ¬â¢s age, according to the U.S. Dept. of Education: Age: 0-3 years Age: 3-4 years Age: 5 years Age: 6 years Begin to associate words they hear frequently with what the words mean. Understand that print carries a message. Sound as if they are reading when they pretend to read. Read and retell familiar stories. Handle objects such as board books and alphabet blocks in their play. Make attempts to read and write. Recognize letters and letter-sound matches. Decide on their own to use reading and writing for different purposes. May write about topics that mean a lot to them. Understand how books should be handled; pretend to read books. Identify familiar signs and labels. Understand that print is read left-to-right and top-to-bottom. Identify new words by using letter-sound matches, parts of words and their understanding of the rest of a story or printed item. Look at pictures in books and realize they are symbols of real things. Identify some letters and make some letter-sound matches. Begin to match spoken words with written ones. Identify an increasing number of words by sight. Begin to pay attention to specific print such as the first letters of their names. Enjoy listening to and talking about storybooks. Begin to write letters of the alphabet and some words they use and hear often. Sound out and represent major sounds in a word when trying to spell. Produce some letter-like forms and scribbles that resemble, in some way, writing. Use known letters (or their best attempt to write the letters) to represent written language especially for meaningful words like their names or phrases such as "I love you." Begin to write stories with some readable parts. Try to use some punctuation marks and capitalization. What Are the Different Types of Alphabet Games? We tend to think of the alphabet song when we think of learning letters, but thatââ¬â¢s only one of many letter games children should be playing. This is because we want learners to do more than just sing the alphabet in order. We want them to be able to recognize and distinguish between the letters. This will make them versatile and adept readers down the road. It can be hard to differentiate between letter recognition games when there are so many out there. Particularly given that not every child learns best in the same way. There are three main types of learners: auditory, visual and kinesthetic. Knowing which one your child is (or combination of) can help you find the best letter games for them. Each alphabet game you use should focus on one or more of these types of learning: What Are the Best Alphabet Games to Use? The first thing to know is that there is no absolute right way to teach the alphabet. However, the most effective method will use a combination of letter games targeting the different types of learning. The best games will address some or all of the following: memory, sight recognition, sound and speaking (or ââ¬Å"phonicsâ⬠), and touch. The following are a few of the most used and versatile ABC learning games we recommend: Alphabet Bingo Alphabet bingo (or ââ¬Å"letter matchâ⬠) is great for audio, visual and kinesthetic learners. Players get to see the letters on a card, hear the letter being said to them (and, if youââ¬â¢d like, you can have them say the letter back to you!), as well as identify and physically place (touch) a marker to the correct letter. You can easily make this game yourself using household items, download it for free online (hereââ¬â¢s a link to 30 free printable alphabet bingo cards), or purchase it from a vendor, such as Amazon. Sidewalk Chalk Games Sidewalk chalk games are fantastic for visual and kinesthetic learners because children get to see letters in a different context and move around while still learning. And the best part? All you need is chalk and (you guessed it) a sidewalk. While there are numerous games you can play, we recommend ââ¬Å"Alphabet Hopscotchâ⬠for its versatility. Alphabet Hopscotch can be played as the hopscotch game we all loved as kids (just with letters inside the squares), as the block version below, as a ââ¬Å"hop and moveâ⬠game (second photo), or any variety of ways you can imagine. Sidewalk letter games are great for children who learn best by doing and being physical./Buggy Buddy Use actions to make the letters more memorable./No Time For Flash Cards Playdoh Letters Playdoh Letters is another fantastic game you can ââ¬Å"playâ⬠in so many different ways. Playdoh Letters are great for kinesthetic and visual learners because of their tactile nature. Use Playdoh to make letters for your child to touch (identify) or have them make Playdoh Letters based off of alphabet letters written on paper or shown on a screen. A child can also stamp letters into the Playdoh, or use magnetic letters or alphabet cookie cutters to make letters. Use Playdoh Letters for audio learners by saying the letters and having your learning choose the correct one, then have them pronounce the letter back to you. Alphabet Puzzles Another great activity for letter learning is the alphabet puzzle. Puzzles are fantastic for kinesthetic and visual learners because children get to touch and move letters around, as well as see them in 3D. Use them for audio learners by saying aloud and having your child say the letter once theyââ¬â¢ve put it in its correct slot. There are many versions of this game in stores and online, but for those looking for a DIY version, This Reading Mama has printable puzzles on her website. Reading Ok, so we know itââ¬â¢s not exactly a game, but reading can really help a child on his or her journey to learning the alphabet. Reading exposes learners to seeing letters on a page, and hearing the letters being pronounced helps them understand letter sounds. Reading also helps children understand how letters can be used to form words and trains them to know English reading is done from left to right and top to bottom on a page. Nicole Honeywill/Unsplash Alphabet Learning Games for Students With Different Learning Needs There are also alphabet learning games available for students with different learning needs (i.e.: for the blind and deaf). Below are a few links we recommend checking out for games using American Sign Language and Braille. We recommend searching through Pinterest and YouTube for alphabet learning games. There are also a ton of free resources available on various websites and blogs (e.g., those by parents and teachers) that can be found using your favorite search engine. Here are a few we recommend: Growing Book By Book Healthy Children How Wee Learn Reading Rockets The Measured Mom The Most Common Mistakes Made When Using Alphabet Games (and How to Avoid Them) Unfortunately, finding fun alphabet games is only the first step. If you want to help a child learn their letters efficiently, make sure to avoid these common mistakes. #1: Teaching the Alphabet in Order Believe it or not, teaching the alphabet in order from A-Z is not the most effective or useful way to learn the alphabet. This is because we want to ensure children not only memorize their letters, but that they know them by sight and sound independent of the alphabet order. Instead, try teaching the letters in groups to both break up the alphabet into chewable nuggets and to give your child a chance to distinguish small words. For example, teaching a child the letters in their name can be a fun, easy way to get started. Not only will they hear and see those letters on a regular basis, theyââ¬â¢ll also have a simple word to learn that ensures they know each letter in their name by sight and sound. Once a child can identify a letter by its name, itââ¬â¢s easier to move on to learning the letter sounds. Another trick is to teach groups of letters that can make small words. Say you focused on the following group of letters: B, P, N, D, E. Once a child has learned those letters, they can begin to identify small words such as: den, bed, pen, etc. #2: Not Making Alphabet Games Hands-On Enough Learning the alphabet and playing alphabet games should be a dynamic, engaging process. Children love to move, touch, see, and interact with the world around them, and alphabet games should tie into that enthusiasm easily. Relying too heavily on methods like worksheets can lose a childââ¬â¢s interest and decrease the likelihood that theyââ¬â¢ve truly learned their letters and can distinguish them in and out of their alphabetic order. #3: Not Mixing It Up Avoid the temptation of using the same two or three games over and over. As with anything, variety is the spice of life. Keep minds interested and engaged by changing up the types of games used to master letters. #4: Not Being Consistent Practice truly makes perfect when it comes to letter recognition and ABC learning games. One simple way to keep children invested is to use everyday objects as a chance to learn. Try labeling objects around the house that a child will come in contact with throughout the day and every time you see them interact with that object, use a simple word to help them connect it back to the alphabet. For example: when your child sits on a couch, you can point to the label and ask them what object they just sat on. Then say the word ââ¬Å"couchâ⬠and/or have them say the word and the letter it starts with (i.e.: ââ¬Å"Câ⬠is for ââ¬Å"couchâ⬠). #5: Not Celebrating Each Success Along the Way Learning the alphabet is an incredible accomplishment! But there are 26 letters to learn and each one mastered is a reason to celebrate. Give your learner a sense of accomplishment by encouraging them and cheering them on every time they learn a new letter. Remember... There is no single correct way to teach the alphabet. However, the more fun, dynamic and engaging you make it, the more your learner will remember his or her letters. The more they remember, the better prepared theyââ¬â¢ll be to learn to read. Be sure to mix up the types of alphabet games you play by using letter recognition game ideas on Pinterest, YouTube and blogs (like ours!). Be consistent and donââ¬â¢t forget to celebrate every learned letter as its own accomplishment. Whatââ¬â¢s Next? Looking for more learning games? Be sure to read our complete guide. Synonyms for Think
Synonyms for Think Synonyms for Think Synonyms for Think By Mark Nichol The bland verb think (from the Old English word thencan, and cognate with thank) is easily supplanted by any one of an impressive assortment of synonyms, each of which has a precise connotation think cannot match. Here are some to think about. To cogitate is to think deeply and intently; the root of the word, which is unrelated to cognition (which refers to knowledge rather than thinking), stems from agitare (meaning ââ¬Å"driveâ⬠), from which we also get agitate. Contemplate connotes thought that is extensive as well as deep; another sense is ââ¬Å"view as possible or probable.â⬠The root of contemplatus, the Latin source word, is templum, the word for a place where omens are observed; it is cognate with temple. Deliberate means to think carefully, as implied by its source, the adjective deliberate. An additional sense is ââ¬Å"discuss before making a decision,â⬠as when a legislative body meets to decide about whether to pass a law. (The derivation is from deliberare, meaning ââ¬Å"consider carefully,â⬠the root is possibly libra, meaning ââ¬Å"poundâ⬠or ââ¬Å"scale,â⬠with the sense of weighing.) To meditate is to focus oneââ¬â¢s thoughts on something; the word, which can, alternatively, allude to planning, also refers to a mental exercise conducted in order to achieve a high state of spiritual awareness. (Meditate is derived from the Latin verb mederi, meaning ââ¬Å"remedy,â⬠and is related to medical and medicine.) Mull, from the Middle English noun mul, meaning ââ¬Å"dust,â⬠is cognate with meal and refers not only to lengthy consideration but also to grinding. Ponder has the connotation of carefully weighing a problem (as a matter of fact, ponder stems from the Latin verb ponderare, meaning ââ¬Å"weigh,â⬠and is related to ponderous), with the implication of extended inconclusive thinking. A similar term with the same etymological origin is perpend. Reflect means, among other things, ââ¬Å"think calmly and quietlyâ⬠; its root is from flectere (meaning ââ¬Å"bendâ⬠), which is also the source of flex. To ruminate is to slowly and repeatedly go over something as if chewing it like a ruminant, a type of animal, such as a cow, that chews its food over and over again. (The word stems from the Latin term rumen, the name in that language and in English for part of a cowââ¬â¢s stomach.) ââ¬Å"Chew overâ⬠is an informal synonym. Others include the word eye and the phrases ââ¬Å"kick around,â⬠ââ¬Å"pore over,â⬠and ââ¬Å"wrestle with.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? The Spanish and Morocco Hostile relations started on 17th December 1859 after the column commanded by Zavala occupied the Sierra de Bullones. The Moroccans army also brought down the Spanish flag down and splattered it in the dirt. The Spanish consul demanded harsher punishment by people he considered responsible for the incident and declined to hand them over to the Spanish military authority for execution. The given Moroccans were accused of doing to Ceuta as punishment for its inhabitants and its garrison.Morocco tried to have access to Spain for the right to build fortifications, as it deemed necessary for the security of Ceuta. Morocco was granted ten days before Spain declared war and called their armies on the Moroccan soil. The Royal Prosecutor under the Sultan stated that the responsibility was borne by the Governor of Ceuta who ordered the firing of guns against the Moroccans, and he requested an extension because of the deteriorating health of the Sultan.
